Beyonce Grown Up

Recently I watched the documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? on Netflix about the life and career of Nina Simone. She was an artist who used her music to spread the message of equal rights during the civil rights movement. Flash forward to 2016 and Beyonce’s new video for the song Formation reminds me of that type of music. While she’s not usually known for tackling political messages head on, in this incarnation she is throwing up her two middle fingers (literally) by creating a song and video heavy with political undertones. I must say I like this new version of Beyonce. She’s serving up a harder edge with a no fucks attitude. There’s a maturity to her message that didn’t always shine through her radio friendly dance hits. It will be fascinating to see if and how she performs this song at the Super Bowl tonight.
